Advanced knitting maths

There is this kind of mathematics that probably no one really understands outside of a wool business. Ten balls of 11.95 euros? All right. A finished sweater for 150 euros? Quite expensive. An additional ball “for safety”? Unbelievably reasonable. Three extra balls because you are not quite sure about the color yet? Basically, a smart investment.

We would like to state explicitly at this point: we did not invent these rules. We only observe them – on ourselves and on our customers: inside.

Funnily enough, Wollkauf rarely follows the same mathematical laws as the rest of everyday life. In the supermarket, people think very carefully whether we really need the branded butter. In the wool business, on the other hand, a sentence such as “The game may not exist later” can release amazing forces. Suddenly, the question is no longer whether we buy the yarn, but how much of it.

And so we'd be on the same side of it. Safety balls.

Let's just explain it. You need nine balls according to the instructions? Then of course you take ten. Sure is safe. After all, we all know what happens when exactly seven rows of sleeves are missing in the end and this color can of course no longer be reproduced.

Of course, the tenth ball remains almost completely after completion. But it doesn't matter. Because you can make something out of it. What exactly, we do not yet know. But something stops.

Incidentally, the next type of knitting calculation begins: Residual wool. Because once wool has been paid once, it seems to lose its financial value completely in our head. Three remaining balls are not 36 euros. They are “remains” and remains do not count.

They could be used to knit a hood or ribbons. Or at some point buy three more balls, so that from the original remains still a sweater. Economically speaking, it is simply completely questionable. Logically speaking, it is an absolutely impeccable invoice.

It works similarly with wool, which has been in the Vorrat liegt.

A yarn that has been waiting in the closet for two years was practically free. At least it feels that way. If we get it out today and finally get it entangled, the result is an entire piece of knitting without us feeling like we are spending even a cent on it. It's almost like making money.

Of course, one could argue that we paid for the wool at some point. But we do not want to make things unnecessarily complicated and not take away the joy from us and you.

Another special feature of wool mathematics concerns Colours.

If we cannot choose between two colors, the most logical solution would probably be to choose one of them. This happens, especially in small projects, surprisingly rarely.

It is much more likely that we will simply take both colors with us. One color for the current project and the other “for later”. Because it is so beautiful, fits so well with the coat or maybe could be taken out of the collection at some point.

And then, of course, there is the supreme discipline: Price per use. Here knitting mathematics suddenly becomes amazingly professional.

If a hand knitted sweater costs 120 euros of material, but is worn every winter for five years, this is actually extremely cheap. If you calculate the hours in which you sit comfortably on the sofa while knitting, also as a leisure activity, the bill becomes even better.

Other people go to the movies. We buy Kashmir. Seen in this way, knitting is both a hobby, clothing and an evening program. And who gets three things for the price of one, can probably really hard speak of a bad financial decision.

When buying wool, it is rarely just about the material. We always buy a little anticipation, an idea, a future project. A sweater that does not yet exist, and many leisurely hours on the sofa.

And as long as we could theoretically make eight different projects out of five balls, our calculation is actually pretty good. At least according to the rules of knitting mathematics.

But how about if knitting mathematics really worked out for once? If we buy green wool, knit socks from it and at the same time do something really good, then buying wool is fairly easy to justify. But let’s explain this briefly: Many patients with lower abdominal cancer suffer from cold feet due to treatment. This is where our knitting hobby comes into play.

Since 2021 there is the action in Austria ‘Green socks’. Women with abdominal cancer receive green socks during their stay in a certified gynecological center – knitted by women they will probably never meet personally.

And it is precisely one of these “unknown” women that we can be. With a pair of green socks we can support and at the same time do something we like to do anyway: knit. In the end, a few balls of wool will not only turn into a new project, but something that can give another woman warmth and hope.

HIER You will find all the information on how you can participate in this beautiful action.

We really want to give you a little more Strickinspo. After such a serious topic, however, the transition back to easier topics is always a bit difficult – but at the end of the article we did not want to postpone the action so that it does not go down.

That’s why we’re just making it short and painless: the costume season is already around the corner. And maybe one or the other would like to get something suitable on the needles in time for the Oktoberfest or another autumnal tent festival. Lana Grossa You have enough choices for yourself, but see for yourself:

And of course, what we don’t want to withhold from you is the new collection of Sandnes Garn. The designs are designed so that they can be worn differently – individually, in a layering look or combined with things that already hang in the wardrobe. Some looks are more feminine and light, others a bit sportier, but that is exactly what makes the collection so uncomplicated: You can simply style it as it fits you.

Sabine's absolute favorite is the Mango Cardigan with the appropriate Mango Scarf. For them, therefore, it is already clear: This season must absolutely on the needles.

And now our very own knitting mathematics comes into play again. At her Nagelqueen Sabine has already discovered the new nail colours for autumn and what should we say: They fit 100 percent to the Mango Cardigan.

Thus, the new wool suddenly justifies the next nail appointment. If this is not a win-win situation, we do not know either.

HIER You will definitely find the complete collection. In our next article in two weeks we want to introduce you to the models but still very precisely.
