For thousands of years, wool has been processed into clothing. The raw material is incredibly versatile and brings with it some great properties. For some time now, the demand for wool has increased many times over again. The reason for this is the increased environmental awareness of consumers. The trend is moving away from short-lived fashion and towards high-quality and sustainable clothing.
Wool is considered a natural, biodegradable material. So you might think that a self-knitted sweater is the non-plus ultimate in terms of sustainability – but there is a lot to consider here.
In order to protect the sheep from parasites, medicines are often administered in the feed or the animals are exposed to pesticide baths. The residues of these pesticides subsequently end up in pastures and water. Also in processing, the natural fiber is often treated with chemicals so that it can comply with the properties of synthetic fibers.
Similarly, the shear is not always paid attention to the welfare of the animal. Often, the sheep’s fur becomes so thick due to overbreeding that the shearer only has a few days to shed an entire flock of sheep in spring. As a result, the shearers are under great time pressure and are anything but cautious with the Schur. Due to the fast and often violent work, the sheep are often injured.
We at “Wolle & Staune” do not want to support precisely this type of wool production. We want to know exactly where the product comes from and how it was processed – that’s why we are always in personal contact with our dealers. It is very important to us to purchase our products only from traders who value sustainable and fair raw material extraction.
Sustainable and fair wool in the highest quality is a matter of course for us.
