Have you ever wondered who is the most beautiful hobby in the world aka. Did knitting actually come up? We have researched for you and take you on a little time travel of knitting.
Unfortunately, you can’t say exactly when people started knitting. But it is thought to have happened in the earliest human communities ever since, probably thousands of years ago.
‚Das Stricken – eine Kunst, so alt ist wie die Menschheit selbst.‚
In archaeological sites around the globe, from Egypt to Europe to South America, early knits were discovered. That's the hammer, isn't it? These findings show that people all over the world, whether it was hot or cold, have swung a kind of “knitting needle”. They have adapted to climatic conditions and used various techniques and materials.
Over time, knitting techniques have evolved and become an important part of the culture. In some cultures, knitting was mainly used for practical purposes, such as making clothes, while in other cultures it served as a type of artistic expression that led to elaborate patterns.
With the discovery of new lands and trade routes, knitting techniques and traditions spread all over the world. Especially in the Middle Ages, knitting experienced a significant upswing.
And why are we telling you all this? Quite simply because the new Isager collection also takes us on a little journey back in time.
This time travel begins in the summer of 2023. “That wasn’t even a year ago” – you probably think now, but wait!
In the summer of 2023, Helga Isager once again invited a group of the most talented Danish knitting designers to Tversted. On this weekend together, they pursued their love of knitting and planned a new Isager collection.
Inspired by the designs of Åse Lund Jensen from the 60s and 70s.
We believe that we have kept our promise of a knitting time travel!
Currently, two designs of the collection are published, which of course we want to share with you right away.
Anne Ventzel I Carla Cape
I was inspired by Åse Lund Jensens knitting instructions from the 50s, 60s and 70s. The specific guide I used as a starting point is called Brikker, a cape with its corresponding cap. I was immediately attracted by the graphic pattern in the web pattern, which I would like to reinterpret here. I like the idea of a cape that you can wear over your clothes. From a purely functional point of view, however, I find a cape in practice a bit annoying when everyday life is hectic and clothes simply have to sit. For this reason, I decided to turn the cape into a more “controlled” form, namely a spacious cardigantic sweater with half-long sleeves. – Anne Ventzel
