fOTOS, design and knitting instructions © Anne Ventzel
Anne Ventzel:
KARLA CAPE is my contribution to the joint collection ISAGER ARCHIVES.
I was inspired by Åse Lund Jensens knitting instructions from the 50s, 60s and 70s.
The specific guide I used as a starting point is called Brikker, a cape with its corresponding cap. I was immediately attracted by the graphic pattern in the web pattern, which I would like to reinterpret here. I like the idea of a cape that you can wear over your clothes. From a purely functional point of view, however, I find a cape in practice a bit annoying when everyday life is hectic and clothes simply have to sit. For this reason, I decided to turn the cape into a slightly more “controlled” form, namely a spacious cardigantic sweater with half-long sleeves.
The weaving pattern is a simple technique to knit a multi-color pattern without processing multiple colors at the same time. This means that what looks like Fair Isle knitting in this project is worked with only one color, which reduces the difficulty level.
The cardigan is worked from top to bottom and does not have to be sewn together at the end. First is the back fit, then shortened rows on the shoulders to create a nice cut. Subsequently, the front sides are knitted in the same manner. Beneath the arm cutouts, the front and rear are connected and knitted in rows over all the fuselage stitches. After that, stitches are picked up at the neck cutout, as well as at the front edges. Finally, stitches for the sleeves are included, on the top of which shortened rows are also made in order to optimize the fit.
All of the ribs are in the entangled rib pattern.
Sizes
Sizes : 1 (2) 3 (4) 5
Brustumfang : 120 (127) 143 (150) 165 cm
Length 1: 75 (75) 75 (75) 75 cm

It is very different how much freedom of movement you want to achieve on your knitted piece. Take measure of your favorite cardigan. So the decision regarding the appropriate size may be easier for you.
The bright version of the KARLA CAPE is knitted with a range of movement of 37 cm and length 1.
The caramel-colored version is knitted with a range of movement of 60 cm and length 1.

Exciting background information about the Isager Archive collection, by Helga Isager:
