For weeks we have been talking about mohair again and again and have realized with horror that we have never really explained to you so exactly what “mohair” is all about.
Some of you probably already know it, others will probably experience an aha moment. Mohair is the hair of angora goats also called mohair goats. Not to be confused with Angora wool, which comes from the rabbit.
The Angoraziege originates from the Asian region but is now at home all over the world due to its noble fur. Larger mohair producer is South Africa, 60% of the wool is produced there and exported across the planet. The USA, Australia and Turkey can also have a say in the production of mohair.
The mohair fiber is not only used for clothing, but also for pillows, carpets or blankets, among other things. For these different uses, however, the same type of fibre is not always used. Mohair can be divided into three quality classes.
- Kid: Here one speaks of the hair of the young goat which is the highest quality and finest hair. Kid mohair is mostly made into clothing.
- Young adults: This type of wool is already a little thicker, but can still be used for clothing.
- Adult: Is the grossest mohair quality from which mainly carpets, blankets or upholstery are produced.
What great qualities does mohair bring with it?
- Soft, fine and light
- Don't scratch
- Antibacterial effects
- simultaneously water repellent and moisture-absorbing
- Cools in summer, warms in winter
- Does not crease when processed correctly
You can only be enthusiastic about this noble fiber and therefore it must not be missing in our range. We not only have great wool in our shop and online, but also beautiful knitting instructions for shawls, cardigans or sweaters.
