The Knitting Scale of a Non-Knitting Woman

Today it gets serious – we have to confess something to you. For years, our articles about new arrivals, knitting scalations and current favorite projects have been published here every two weeks. And they are written – we say this today officially – by Evelyn.

Sometimes these texts are created on a tour of discovery in Asia, sometimes spontaneously in some European city, then somewhere else on a skiing holiday or in their current home in Vienna. She is always ready to pack the suitcase for the next adventure.

What she has never packed – and here comes confession – are knittings. Yes, that’s right: Evelyn himself had no knitting tools in his hand since elementary school and that was about 25 years ago.

But about a week and a half ago, that changed. Instead of booking the next flight, this time she has decided on another adventure – one with wool, needles and a large portion of motivation.

How the whole thing went (and perhaps not quite according to plan), she tells you today herself:

Every time I write these posts, I think about how I sat on the couch with my grandma as a child. She knit me stitches, I was busy knitting, and scarves came out that were either way too short, way too scratchy, or just a wild mix of both. Not to mention the stitches I either lost in between or just added somewhere new.

Of course, Grandma had to rush to the rescue regularly. I still hear her swearing today when she has tried to get my stitches off the needle, which are too tight, and I am quite sure she prophesied at the time that she would break her fingers at some point because of my knitting.

So I grew up by hand and later even attended a five-year fashion school – with about 15 hours of sewing, cutting and fabric chaos every week. Knitting has somehow been forgotten. Until my sisters started it again a few years ago.

Since then, I’ve always watched them wistfully finish the most beautiful pieces of knitting, knowing (or perhaps using the convenient excuse) that I’m certainly too impatient for something like that.

Every now and then I tried to simply outsource the whole thing – so I gave small knitting orders to my sisters. A top here, a sweater there. However, most of them are still waiting for completion. And that is probably the reason why I decided: enough is enough, I do it myself.

So I went a week and a half ago, bought two balls of beige merino wool and a circular knitting needle in a thickness of 3.5. And what do you think I have chosen? Of course, the famous Sophie Scarf’! Warum? Actually, only because my sister had already bought the instructions and thought that was suitable for beginners. Well then, nothing stands in the way of my knitting career. At least I thought. And then came the mesh.

You experienced knitters will probably frown now but yes, if you have never struck stitches in your life (after all, my grandma was always responsible for this), then it is not so easy as it looks.

I had picked out a YouTube tutorial and thought, now it’s off. Well, wrongly thought. In hindsight, I would say the video was more complicated than an open-heart surgery. After countless attempts and a short crisis of meaning later it was finally done: After two and a half hours I actually had six stitches on the needle. Sechs!

And then it really started: three stitches on the right, three stitches to take off, briefly watch a tutorial to figure out how to make stitches, then four stitches on the right, three stitches to take off and so on.

How many times I have separated everything again and started over, I do not want to reveal here so exactly. But let's put it this way: the number was clearly double-digit. Nevertheless, I was tireless. After a total of four hours, my Sophie Scarf’ stolze 2,5 Zentimeter lang.

I know that sounds funny, but I was incredibly proud. I honestly can’t remember the last time I felt so much joy for something. I was so excited that I could hardly sleep at night and the next morning I actually woke up from knitting with sore muscles in my chest. Please don't ask me how that happened. I didn't know until then that this was possible.

Since then, I have spent every free minute knitting. The first Sophie Scarf’ I have now finished – of course not completely error-free, but with all the more heart blood. And because I'm so proud, I decided right away that this year, the whole family would just have a Sophie Scarf’ Got for Christmas.

The second one – this time in red – is already about 15 centimeters long, and it only took me about one and a half hours. So I would say: clear progress! From now on, I not only do not have to worry about gifts anymore, but have unexpectedly finally found a real hobby for me.

This story, of course, immediately motivated us to provide you with new inspiration. Because not only Evelyn is in knitting fever – Sabine has also hit one or the other new favorite project.
