The balloon sweater has very bulky sleeves, which start far below the shoulders and thus underline the tight-fitting fret on the wrist. The balloon sweater is knitted from top to bottom. At the beginning of the pass, shoulder increases as well as shortened rows for the neckline are knitted at the same time. Then the front and back are knitted separately (smooth right in rows). Under the arm cutouts, the work is collected again on a needle and the remaining body is knitted on a circular knitting needle. Stitches for the sleeves are picked up around the arm cutouts and these are then knitted in rounds on a circular knitting needle and finally on a set of double-pointed needles (or using the Magic Loop method). Thus, the balloon sweater does not have to be sewn, except for the threads at the end.
Sizes Guide
The balloon sweater should have a range of movement (positive ease) of about 10-15 cm in relation to your chest circumference. The sizes XS(S) M(L) XL (2XL) 3XL match a chest circumference on the body of 80-85 (85-90) 90-95 (95-100) 100-110 (110-120) 120-130 cm (note that these dimensions only apply if the gauge is adhered to). Take a measure of your chest circumference (or the widest part of your body) before you begin the actual knitting to determine the size that suits you best. For example, if your breast circumference is 94 cm, you should choose size M. A sweater in M has a chest circumference of 110 cm and in this case would have a range of movement (positive ease) of 16 cm.
